Blog #5: Republican Motherhood

1.What role did the Revolutionary War play in the transformation of housewifery to Republican Motherhood?
It allowed for women to show that they could step up to help care for the children and run the house when the men were away fighting in the war.

2. What were the consequences of Republican Motherhood on women?
Women were responsible for the education of their children as allowed by the standards of society (doc b). Women were also responsible for the peace and prosperity of their families as seen through the eyes of God (doc a).

3. What is the significance of the ideology of Republican Motherhood as a stage in the process of women's socialization?
Women had a role in society that required them to be educated (doc b) which meant that they began to desire a role outside of the home.


1. Describe the setting.
The photo looks staged. Their is a wallpaper background. It looks very formal and the people look dressed up.

2. Who serves at the center of the portrait and why? How does the women look? How is she "republican" rather than aristocratic?
The mother because it demonstrates her important role in the lives of her children. The women looks formal. She is not aristocratic because she is holding her children in a way that leads an observer to believe that she is a central part of their lives.

3. What values do her sons exhibit?
Respect for their mother and patience for the artist.

4. Is there a significance to the position of Mrs. Tilgham's arm?
Her arm is around her younger son in a protective manner.

Hidden Figures was a movie that demonstrated a strong group of African American women during post World War 2 who defied the status quo of women as well as African Americans to expand the role of women in American society.
